10 Ways to Improve Your Quality of Life

Updated: Jan 16, 2022

What better way to celebrate than ringing in the new year with resolutions on your mind? For some reason, new beginnings seem to begin at the top of the year. Do yourself a favor and get a solid start in 2022 on improving yourself. Don’t live your life by the highlight reels of other people’s social media. Here are ten ways to improve your quality of life in real life.

Become Introspective

Spend less time focusing on other people and focus on yourself. Don’t just mind your business; engage in mindfulness. Create a routine that allows you to evaluate your thoughts and emotions without judgment. Ask yourself questions that support you in adjusting your attitude, values, and beliefs.

Unexpressed emotions will never die; they are just buried alive. -Sigmund Frued

Start Healing

It’s trending now, so it must be good! Go to therapy. If your employer doesn’t offer an Employee Assistance Program (E.A.P.), check your insurance provider’s coverage for mental health. Journaling is another good place to start too. I love journaling, and it allows us to re-author negative experiences.

Cultivate a Healthy Circle

Be the gatekeeper of your energy! Reduce communication with people who are not good to you for any reason. Spend time on dynamics that are reciprocal and healthy. Discover the people who value you and people you respect; let hope they’re the same people!

Get Better Sleep

Without getting into the science of it, sleep is essential! Having a good sleep hygiene routine can be a lifesaver. The body and brain can regenerate and heal with proper rest. Make time to relax and get better sleep.

Get Physical

The gym is great, but running on the treadmill and slamming down weights doesn’t support better mental health. However, good physical health is essential! Consider doing virtual or in-person body movement activities. Activities like Yoga, Tai Chi, and Qigong help heal trauma and restore balance to chakras. Eating clean will optimize the necessary energy for physical activity.

Reduce Financial Stress

Write down your financial obligations. If it doesn’t cause you too much anxiety, create a budget. Try to make minimum payments on time. Pay off the smallest debt first. Look into financial apps and programs to help shrink your debt. One of the favorites that I follow is The Budgetnista.

Reading books allows for growth, gaining knowledge, and empowerment. If you don’t have a ton of time, find quick, easy reads, or use audible. I like books in the categories of self-help, leadership, and autobiographies.

Set Goals

Goal setting is my thing! Although goal setting is good, it can be challenging for some people. Set short-term goals to gain momentum. Focus on monthly or quarterly goals that follow the S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Oriented) method. Vagueness can be a barrier to success regarding goal setting.

Laugh More

Laughter may not be the best medicine for everything, but it certainly has therapeutic benefits. Laughter helps reduce stress, overall mental health and improves the immune system. Laugh often.

Enhance Your Skills

Everyone is good at something! What’s your “thing?” Never stop building your skills. Take a course or training in an area related to your skills to improve yourself. Self-improvement generally increases esteem.

Save yourself the hassle of creating lofty goals that will set you back, discourage you, or goals that aren’t meaningful. If you believe in happiness, work toward that concept. Do the internal work so you can improve the quality of your life. Feel free to try a few suggestions mentioned to hit the ground running.
